Music Licenses are of many types...
1) Sync or Synchronization license is for music used for a Television show or movie.
2) B.G.M. License is a Background music license needed for any commercial broadcast of music is a public environment.
3) Grand Performance License. Music that is used in a Theatrical Performance.
There is a license to obtain the use of music in a commercial campaign. In this type of an arrangement a fee is established that can be between $25,000 and $100,000 for the use of the song during the commercial campaign. Usually no longer then 1 Year.
A Buy out: is a one time fee that is negotiated for the use of a particular sound recording of a piece of music. As on a commercial campaign there is no transfer of ownership as the copyright stays with the writer.
A Music Supervisor... Is someone whose job it is to secure licenses of music and to work out all the exact timings and placement of music in film or T. V. This has become a strong position these days as a lot of composers are looking for varied opportunities for their music.
Video Games. Have become the fastest growing entertainment revenue and are a strong source for writers looking for placement of their music. A buy out is the common deal for this but sometimes a royalty of 3%-5% can be negotiated.
Sampling. Had previously no president for how to work out the use of music that was not created by the artist doing the sampling. These methods are now buy out fees ar the transfer of partial copyright ownership and therefore partial royalties as well.
Broadway Musicals. Are a Large money maker for writers if the show in question was to become a hit on broadway. A writer can make 6% or better after a show recoups its a initial expenses and in a years time a writer could make anywhere from $600,000 - $1,000,000!!
